Joe Huber Family Farm & Bob's Red MIll Racing Presents...

Monday, August 2, 2010

The Joe Huber Family Farm and Bob's Red Mill p/b Focus Racing present Apple Cross, THE two-day season opener race weekend in beautiful Starlight, Indiana just minutes from Louisville. Come out Sept. 11 & 12 as we celebrate the start of cyclocross (and apple) season by racing through private farmland surrounded by lakes, orchards, pumpkin patches, rolling corn fields; an idyllic yeoman farmer's fantasy that would make Thomas Jefferson weep.

The fun doesn't stop with the racing, there will be hayrides, goat petting and other activities for the kids! Let the sound of cowbells and the sweet smell of warm apple pie bring you to Starlight, IN September 11 and 12.

Dust off the 'cross bike and come on up - this will be a great tune-up for the Zipp OVCX Series beginning the following weekend in Cincinnati!

Racing starts at 10:00 am both days. Pre-register for both races and save $10 (and no day-of late fee).

2010 Rocky Mountain Altitude 29er Reviewed!

Sunday, May 9, 2010

On the eve of Rocky Mountain Bicycles 29th year of existence, it launched its 29er platform using the Altitude full-suspension and the Vertex hardtail bikes as the canvas on which to paint art. I’ve previously reviewed the Altitude frameset with an emphasis on outlining its suspension and straight-up geometry characteristics so it made sense for me to leverage that familiarity by trying the Altitude 29er.

This “First Looks” article serves as an introduction to the Altitude 29er; a future article and further follow-ups will canvass the bike’s performance and long-term durability.

Rocky has had a well deserved reputation for putting together quality bicycles with a feel best described as nimble. The bottom line is that Rocky’s handle well.

In 2008, Rocky Mountain replaced the ETS-X in the all-mountain category with the Altitude platform. The Altitude can be thought of as a all-mountain bike for those who prefer to keep their wheels on the ground as opposed to the Slayer Super XC bikes which I described as a pocket downhill bike in my review. I had found the conventional 26″ wheeled Altitude to be a best-in-class climber and a singletrack knife.

The Altitude 29er is an Altitude with several frame and component tweaks for 29″ wheels.

Full article can be found here:

Cherokee Park Trail Day - Saturday, April 3rd 12-4pm

Wednesday, March 31, 2010

A message from Chuck Clark, KyMBA trail crew co-leader:

The next trail crew in Cherokee is scheduled for this coming Saturday (April 3rd) between 12-4. It should be a great weekend to ride beforehand and then do some work if you want.

One thing that will be changing from previous trail crews is the location. Due to a delay in trail design, we will switch gears to focus on the KyMBA Downhill or Beech Tree Hill. Most of you will probably be familiar with the large, fallen beech tree that the trail goes through on this section of trail.

There will be no major project, but several small ones including:
- improving trail section as it goes just underneath of fallen beech tree. Elimination of braking bumps, removal of logs, etc. will be focus.
- closing of rogue walking trails all up and down that hillside with branches, logs, etc.
- deberming in a few areas on hillside and flat
- if there is enough time and manpower, I would love to tune up those berms on the switchback.

If you have a spot or two you would like to focus on this popular hillside, please come on out and help. Tools will be provided. Bring gloves. I think Olmsted normally brings some water, but the temps will be warm this weekend.

This Google map link shows the parking lot near the archery range where Beals Branch Rd and the Scenic Loop come together. Walk up the hillside via the trail entrance/exit and look for the trailcrew.
Hope to see you there!

O'Bannon Woods Trail Day - Sunday, March 14th, 10:00am

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Remember that clocks "spring forward" one hour this weekend!  Also, volunteer six hours to our local trails and receive a 25% discount in our shop or The Trail Store!

A message from Chris Ward:

We plan to work from 10am - 1pm on the Fire Tower trail that was built last Summer.  We have a few areas of the trail that need to be rock armored to be able to support riding during the spring and fall seasons.  Some of these sections either have springs or seeps that are keeping the areas wet. Other areas have suffered damage from freeze-thaw that needs to be repaired.   Riding season is getting closer, so this is an important task that needs to be completed to get the trail in good riding condition.  We will need lots of help!

If conditions allow we will ride afterward.

Cherokee Park Trail Volunteer Opportunity - Saturday, 3/6

Thursday, March 4, 2010

A message from crew leader Chuck Clark:

OK! I think it’s pretty safe to say the trail crew this weekend WILL NOT be snowed out.

Everything is as previous except the times will be 10-2 this Saturday, 3/6. Might be a good day to bring the road bike (gasp!) and venture out afterward as the temps are forecasted to be in the 50’s. Unfortunately, it will be freezing every night beforehand, so the trails will likely be very soft (which means unfit to ride!).

Please forward to anyone that might be interested. The hyperlink in the e-mail below will help anyone with directions, etc.

Thanks!

Chuck Clark

DRT Mountain Bike Race Series - Starts April 18th!

Friday, February 26, 2010

Received this information today from our good friends at DRT Consulting. The DRT Race Series is an excellent addition to your calendar, particularly if you are targeting the DINO race series. Many of the DRT and DINO races this year will be within a 2 - 3 hour drive of Louisville, and - as always - promise to provide the highest quality of promotion and racing!

A few words from Don Galligher, owner of DRT Consulting:

Welcome to the DRT Series. It is a five event grass root production trying to put the fun back into MTB racing! Series awards will be given, and each event will present individual age group and overall accolades. The series goal is to give a complement for your preparation for the premiere events in our region, and for beginners to have a non-threatening event to get their feet wet. The series will visit many excellent trail systems throughout the state, and thanks to HMBA, we have many great venues to choose from. A portion of the proceeds from the two events held at BCSP will be donated to HMBA to further trail development in the state of IN.

Yucaipa Dirt Classic + Win Pua's Palace

Thursday, February 11, 2010

If you're like me, you often dream of traveling to indulge in the best riding, having your own personal restroom pre-race, having a warm shower after races, an exceptionally comfortable place to camp that doesn't leave those impossible "cricks" in your back, a kitchen where you can immediately make a meal without even having to leave the venue.  Ah, the luxury!

The good news is, you don't have to be PRO for all of this to be yours!  PRO mountain biker Pua Sawicki is raffling off her 2006 Carriage C-Force Fifth Wheel Toy Hauler and her 2008 F-250 4X4 Crewcab to pull it anywhere you can dream of taking it.  Both of these "toys" have all the bells and whistles - from heated seats and navigation to a full bike garage with storage drawers and work bench!  This could be the best raffle ticket you've ever purchased.  There is no doubt that you would be the envy of cyclists everywhere - I promise.  But, check it out for yourself:
